The ‘world’s sexiest athlete’ broke down in tears after being selected to represent Germany in front of a home crowd at the European Championships.

Alica Schmidt, 23, is running for her country in the 400 metres in Munich, just a month after enduring a difficult time at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. There, the blonde beauty took part in the 4x400m mixed relay, but her quartet was unable to make the final after finishing fifth in their heat.

But now Schmidt, who last season also worked as a fitness coach with Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, is in the semi-finals of the individual event after coming third in Monday’s heat. And in an interview with German outlet Sport1 ahead of the event, she’d admitted she was desperate to get going.

“I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere at the stadium and to compete myself knowing that my friends and family will be cheering me on at the stadium,” she said, and also expressed her delight on Instagram.

“Selected for the 400m individuals at the European Championships,” she wrote. “Guys you have no idea what that means to me! That was my main goal this year and I knew it would be everything else but easy to achieve it.

“I’ve worked so hard and gave so many sacrifices in the past month to get to run in Munich in front of a home crowd. To achieve this goal now is the best feeling ever and I‘m beyond happy.”

Schmidt has a silver and bronze medal from age-group European Championship races at under-20 and under-23 level, but implied that competing in Munich represented her career highlight: “Cheers to the most special race of my career so far can‘t wait.”

Back in 2017, Australian magazine Busted Coverage gave her the title of ‘world’s sexiest athlete’, a notion the athlete herself dismissed, saying: “I do not know why I got this title. Sport clearly comes first.”

Her social media profile continues to escalate though, with the star boasting over 3.2 million followers on Instagram. She regularly posts saucy snaps and also runs her own YouTube channel that fans can subscribe to.
